Chapter Five

Corey slept a whole of nine hours, during which time Sebastian only left his side to go to the bathroom and wash up a bit. Sonya dropped by and brought him breakfast, also letting him know that Ross was doing well.

"He woke up for a few minutes at nine, but I put him back under. Easier for him to go through the process if he's unconscious for most of it."

Sebastian nodded. "Thanks, sis."

"Don't mention it. I know you wouldn't have changed anyone if you didn't think the person was worth it. Although you do owe us the story. You realize that, right?"

Sebastian wasn't looking forward to that particular conversation, since him tracking down Corey and Ross at the restaurant hadn't been his proudest moment. But he'd worry about it later, once he'd spoken to Corey. "Yeah, we'll talk. I'll drop by to see Ross. I need to be here for Corey."

"We understand," Sonya replied with a smile. "He's your mate. Also, I couldn't believe that he made Father laugh. I don't remember when he last did that, laughed in front of anyone other than us."

Yeah, it had been pretty remarkable, but Corey was like that—brave, beautiful, funny, probably more so than he himself realized. He must have looked pretty besotted because Sonya ushered him back inside. "God, it's almost nauseating to see you like this," she said, gagging. "Get out of my sight."

He stuck his tongue out at her, grinning. It was their game, since she was the oldest of them and she liked to lord it over Sebastian, even if Sebastian was an Alpha and she was a Beta. Sebastian liked to indulge her and pretend to be childish from time to time. God, he'd missed living with them. If not for Corey, he probably would have never survived living away from the pack.

"You'll understand when you'll find your own mate," he told her.

Sonya hugged him tightly, all playfulness forgotten. "Maybe. For now, it's enough to see you happy."

She didn't hold on for long, and instead, pushed him back into his room. Sebastian watched her go, and then closed the door behind her. As he went back to the bed, he wished his return had been under happier circumstances. He was still worried about Ross, and he had a responsibility to the man. It wasn't quite like with a vampire sire and his or her child, but it was close enough that Sebastian would always feel a bond between them. The mate bond was stronger, though, and his concern for Corey won out, like it always would.

Corey finally stirred a little while later, stretching lazily and looking more like a kitten than a man. He blinked and rubbed his eyes, obviously not registering his location just yet. Finally, his honey-brown gaze fell on Sebastian and he tensed. A few seconds later, he was wide awake, all traces of sleepiness forgotten.

"So it wasn't a dream after all. How's Ross?"

"He's doing well," Sebastian replied, taking his mate's hand and squeezing it.
